About

What we do

Since our formation we have mostly produced a quarterly newsletter. We have acquired books and information to make available to members and non-members. We have held non profit talks and conferences and attend or run our own events where we can give information and support to parents and adults. We also hold an annual general meeting usually in November. Our core activity is a helpline for general enquiries as well as one for adults.

Our committee meets once a month in Ipswich to discuss on-going affairs, agree to and plan courses of action to further the progress of the charity.

In 1991 The Suffolk Dyslexia Association started an Adult Support Group where adults can be assessed and then offered lessons, either daytime or evening classes.

One of our adults won the Eastern Region Individual Award in Adult Learners’ Week promoted by NIACE (The National Institute Of Adult Continuing Learning) to recognise and celebrate learning achievements of adults across England.

We have supported parent support groups throughout the county and also ran one in Ipswich for a few years. The groups have been in Stowmarket, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Wickham Market. For a period of time there has been another Dyslexia Association in Bury St Edmunds/ Stowmarket and more recently Lowestoft with whom we have co-operated.

During the last 30 years we have raised money for our activities and to provide financial support to enable parents in certain circumstances to help those who suffer from this hidden disability they include

  • Bursary Fund to help meet tuition costs for children needing a private specialist teacher.
  • Tinted Lens Fund to help in the purchase of coloured lens for children’s glasses for the condition of Scotopic Sensitivity / Mears Irlen / Visual Stress
